CulinArt is expanding its opportunities for students to minimize their waste in the cafeteria. Three key programs are aimed to reduce the need to use disposable food and beverage packaging when grabbing a bite.
For some time now, bringing your own reusable mug to purchase coffee, tea, or fountain drinks is rewarded with a $0.30 discount off the regular price. Not only are participants saving their pennies, but also reducing the amount of
polystyrene cups that ultimately end up in a landfill.
Fall ’10 was the kick-off to the green basket program. When ordering a sandwich or burger, students can now ask for a green basket instead of the clear plastic clamshell containers that have been traditionally provided. The new green baskets allow customers who are staying and enjoying their purchase in the
cafeteria dining area to make a considerable impact on reducing the amount of unnecessary waste that is produced by the cafeteria.
Finally, in Spring 2011, CulinArt unveiled its newest sustainable initiative: a reusable to-go container. Participants are able to use these containers and bring them back to the cafeteria when they are finished with it. They will then be able to return it to be cleaned and exchange it for a new, clean one, or get a token that can be redeemed for a clean container at a later time.
Thanks to these three initiatives, the use of disposable cups and food containers in no longer needed. Bring your mug and ask for a green basket today!
The new green container program was made possible through a collaboration between Culinart and the Student group, Envirolutions. Envirolutions has been working for a number of years on exploring possible options to integrate a reusable container into the cafeteria at Pratt. In Spring 2011, Envirolutions played a key role in the launch of the new program and is continuing to monitor and improve the program's success.
