What’s the eco-footprint of a piece of luggage?
This past Fall, CSDS partnered with TUMI, the high-end luggage designer, to conduct an assessment of the environmental impact of a rolling bag and a computer bag. Four Pratt interns from the ComD, Industrial Design, and Environmental Systems Management disassembled the bags and studied how each component contributed to impacts on water use, resource and energy use, ecological and human health and climate change throughout the entire life-cycle of the bags. Based on the findings, CSDS was able to make actionable recommendations to the sourcing of materials, manufacturing processes and design that would reduce their environmental footprint. TUMI is already exploring how to integrate these suggestions into the production of their products.
